My #1 Home Organization Tip
My #1 home organization tip actually has nothing to do with organization. It’s not about what bins or boxes to buy (although, that’s coming next week) and I’m not going to talk about color-coding your files or share some clever lifehack you’ve never heard before.
While I was in design school I worked part-time as a professional organizer (yup, for reals!) and as you can probably guess, I LOVE Marie Kondo and her Netflix show. Getting organized is a huge priority of mine, and I know that I feel so much better and I’m way more productive when my home (and my home office) is organized.
So what’s my #1 tip for getting organized?
The most important step in getting organized is to get rid of stuff you don’t need and don’t use.

Boring, but true – purging what’s unnecessary is the only way to truly get organized. There’s no point in trying to organize stacks of paper or food storage containers or office supplies that you don’t really need or like! By taking the time to ruthlessly purge, you’ll be left with only what you use, love, and need – and then it’s a heck of a lot easier to get it all organized.
Don’t buy a single storage box or basket until you’ve done this crucial step! This home organization tip will save you from organizing a bunch of junk you don’t want or need anyway. When you pare down to the essentials, you’ll have so much more room to breathe.
