How to Refresh Your Home for the New Year

My design tips for 2021 have nothing to do with shopping, and everything to do with simplifying. Here's how to refresh your home for the new year.

I don’t know about you, but I love the fresh start of a new year. I know it’s made up – it’s silly, because January is really no different than December was – but there’s something fun and refreshing about the calendar turning over. After the influx of holiday stuff like gifts and decorations and blankets and serving platters and ALL THE THINGS, it can feel burdensome to start the new year with so much holiday overwhelm still hanging on. So let’s get to it: how to refresh your home for the new year.

How to Refresh Your Home for the New Year

This might not be what you expect; I am not about to tell you to go buy some on-trend pillows or candles, or lamps or new furniture to spruce your house up for 2021. It’s actually the exact opposite! My design tips for the new year have nothing to do with shopping, and everything to do with decluttering and donating. If you’re feeling like you’re ready to shake off December – heck, shake off the dumpster fire that was 2020! – I strongly suggest focusing the next couple of weeks on decluttering your home.

Tips to Declutter in 2021

Plan some time to walk through your house, figure out what you need and what you really don’t need. Let go of the extra by donating your gently used goods to a person, a company, or an organization that can really put it to good use.

I think you’ll be amazed by the results of decluttering! It’s not going to feel like your house is empty – it’s going to feel like your home suddenly has space and breathing room again. And you’ll be able to appreciate your favorite things and see your belongings in a new light because they’re not drowning under the weight of everything else that was in the way.

Need a Little More Motivation to Declutter?

If you need a little more motivation to get started than just a blog post, there is an awesome documentary on Netflix called Less is Now by The Minimalists, and I find it so inspiring to see what they do and how they do it. (And psssst, this is also a great way to get family members on board and refresh your home for the new year! I was watching it and my husband came in the room, watched it for a bit with me and then he left. And he left because he realized he had about three or four shirts in his closet to declutter that was suddenly inspired to get rid of.)

I’m also taking part in #simplicitychallenge from Simplified® on Instagram. Each day in January they’re sharing one easy, actionable idea to declutter your home and simplify your life.

It’s Time to Shake Off 2020

You don’t need to shop for new home decor to feel like you’ve got a fresh start for the year – less is more and letting go opens up space to appreciate the kickass things you already have. It’s time to declutter, get the extra things out of your home, and allow the stuff you no longer need be a gift to somebody else.

It's time to shake off 2020! Surprisingly, my design tips for 2021 have nothing to do with shopping, and everything to do with simplifying. Here's how to refresh your home for the new year.
