Designer tip: I recommend investing in a complete bed (which typically includes the headboard, footboard, and side rails) for a polished look. With just a headboard, the sides and end of your bed can look untidy and unfinished.

What to look when investing in a new bed:

• Love to read in bed? An upholstered headboard will help.
• Hate when your blankets slide off the end of the bed? Look for a bed with a footboard that will keep comforters and blankets in place.
• Have tall ceilings (or just love a little visual drama)? A four-poster or canopy bed makes a badass design statement.
