Fall 2024 Fashion Trends (Through the Eyes of an Interior Designer)
If you know me, Macon interior designer Lesley Myrick, you’ll know I get really, really excited about 3 things:
- Interior design
- Organization
- Fashion
If interior design and organization are my day job, then fashion is my (unpaid) side hustle. I religiously watched What Not To Wear every Friday night during its early Y2K run (PS – they’re back!). My favorite iPhone app is Stylebook, a closet app to document your wardrobe and create outfits. I’ve been recruited as a personal shopper by friends, and look to Carrie Bradshaw and Jenna Lyons as style muses.
Here’s a look at my favorite fall 2024 fashion trends (through the lens of an interior designer, of course!), and how you can translate elements of street style trends into your home.
Fall 2024 Fashion Trend: Black + Denim
Black and denim are the perfect pairing: black elevates denim’s casual nature, and denim tones down black’s formality. I love that this pairing can be dressed up or down depending on shoes and accessories. It’s a classic look that still feels current.
Using black and denim in interior design: denim isn’t a fabric I would use in an interior (somehow its cool factor gets lost in translation and it reads as cheap and flimsy), but take inspiration from the idea of rough, casual materials paired with sleeker more formal ones, like linen and leather.
Fall 2024 Fashion Trend: Bold Bottoms
My favorite of these fall 2024 fashion trends might be bold colors and patterns on the bottom, paired with graphic tees and sweatshirts on top. Nothing matches, and yet it looks amazing! The fact that nothing matches is precisely why it looks amazing – every element is exciting and unexpected.
Using bold bottoms in interior design: It’s not about “bottoms” specifically, but the idea of pairing a brightly-colored pattern with an edgier graphic element for an unexpected accent in a room. Introduce a framed concert poster and a leopard-print accent pillow (this one’s a favorite I have in my own home) for a dose of cool.
Fall 2024 Fashion Trend: Edgy Layers
As a Canadian living in Georgia, I don’t do well with the summer heat (which is why we took off to Morocco, Minnesota and Canada this summer!) and I long for the cooler days of fall where I can finally add layers to my outfits again. Leather jackets are my jam – at this point, I own 7 of them ranging from classic black and cognac to perforated chartreuse and quilted khaki green. When it comes to edgy layers, it’s all about playing with texture and sheen level.
Using edgy layers in interior design: This is an easy one! Faux fur, leather, hammered metals and studded accents all bring an edgy look to a room. Toss a sheepskin over the back of a chair, swap out a wood coffee table for a distressed hammered brass one, mix a few leather throw pillows in with velvet or printed ones, and add a studded box or perforated metal bowl as your centerpiece. The layered combo of these edgy materials is an instant style upgrade.
Fall 2024 Fashion Trend: Pops of Red
I actually selected each of these images initially for different reasons, but once I saw them grouped together I began to love the unexpected touch of red in each look. Red isn’t a color I gravitate to as an interior designer – I much prefer hot pinks if I’m going to go bold and warm – but the red accents are really what make each look special. I might be starting to come around to a little bit of red, especially since it’s one of the strongest fall 2024 fashion trends.
Using pops of red in interior design: While a red accent wall (a la Mr. Big in Sex and the City) isn’t a look I recommend, consider adding throw pillows with a touch of red in the pattern or a graphic piece of art with red splashed in it. A pop of red in an interior is like lipstick – the perfect finishing touch.
Fall 2024 Fashion Trend: Minimalist Nail Art
I love the simplicity of nude nails with black or navy accents that are uncomplicated yet super elevated. It’s a little touch of graphic style without feeling cluttered or overdone.
Using minimalist nail art in interior design: If you’ve been living in a neutral world, it’s time to add an unexpected visual punch. A black picture frame with a white mat will stand out beautifully on a neutral-colored wall, and swapping your brushed nickel cabinet hardware for matte black will instantly update white kitchen cabinets.
