THE HOUSE
A new-construction guest house in Macon, built for a CEO and her family. Small footprint, and every square foot of it had to earn its place.
This is the same family whose 1920s bungalow sits on the same property. We've worked on this property across four years now, in three separate rounds, and the guest house was the one where we got to start from the ground up.
The brief was a weekend hideaway with the feel of a good boutique hotel. People use that phrase loosely, so here's what it actually means: you walk in and everything you need is already there, nothing in the room is too precious to use, and it's obvious somebody made decisions instead of just filling the space.

Every square foot had a job
It's a pool house and a guest house, which means it's never doing one thing at a time. Out-of-town family stay here. Friends stay here. Their son and his new wife lived here for a stretch, which is a completely different ask than a weekend retreat.
That was the design problem. A room that works for two nights and a room that works for two months are not the same room, and this one had to be both without looking like a compromise.
The kitchenette is small and it doesn't behave like it. Full function in a tight run, with tile bold enough to be the first thing you notice walking in. Directly opposite, an office nook that doubles as the eating area, because in a small space like this everything needs to do double duty.
The bedroom and living room open to each other. Queen bed on one side, and on the other a trundle that turns the living room into a second sleeping space when the house is full.
Then the part I still like best! Instead of one coffee table, we used two small ones. Pull them apart and they become nightstands for the trundle. It's a small thing, but it's the difference between a living room that can host someone and a living room with a bed shoved into it.
Pattern runs through the whole place, in the wallpaper and the tile, all on one palette so the rooms read as one house instead of four small ones. The bathroom is papered in cats. It's playful and it still holds its own next to everything else.
